Sepang to Host 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix as Formula 1 Returns to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Formula 1 and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have officially confirmed that Malaysia will make a historic return to the World Championship calendar, with the Sepang International Circuit set to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4, 2026.

The event—slotted on the 2026 schedule between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix—remains subject to final commercial agreements and official sign-off, including approval by the World Motor Sport Council. It will officially be titled the “Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia”.

The landmark agreement reached between Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia preserves a Grand Prix round on the 2026 calendar that would otherwise not have taken place, leaving the remainder of the 2026 World Championship schedule unchanged.

Sepang, which debuted on the F1 calendar in 1999, is widely regarded as one of motorsport’s most challenging and iconic circuits, celebrated for its technical layout, passionate fanbase, and unpredictable weather conditions. Organisers confirmed that details regarding public ticket sales will be announced shortly.

Welcoming the announcement, Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, highlighted the sport’s capacity for swift international coordination.

“We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1.

FIA President His Excellency Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised the cross-border leadership and operational cooperation that enabled Sepang’s return.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, emphasized the strong bilateral ties underpinning the venture.
