Petaling Jaya, 9 July– Five men were charged in court today for the kidnapping of a businessman and property developer Datuk Seri R.Arumugam, whose body was found in the bushes in Batu 27, Jalan Rawang Bestari Jaya on the 27th of June 2020.
The five, Azhari Shahrom Shaihmi, 56; Mohd Durai Abdullah, 52; Sheikh Ismail Sheikh Hassan, 26; N.Vickneswarar,28; and a Bandladeshi national, Kasi Arul, 42 were charged for the kidnapping of Arumugam with the intentional of holding the victim for ransom to the tune of SGD50 Million(RM153 Million).
The offence under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 carries a mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment and those found guilty can also be whipped.
The sixth suspect, Datuk K. Ramachandran, is accused of abetting the five in the crime at the same time and place. He was Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate for the Batang Kali Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) seat during GE13.
He was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, and faces the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and can also be whipped if sentenced to jail.
The offense is said to have been committed in Taman Kejiranan Central Spine, Jalan Margosa, Bandar Sri Damansara here at 10.30 am on June 10. Investigations revealed that the mastermind behind the kidnapping was known to the victim.
The case was mentioned in front of Magistrate Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir, whereas the prosecution was by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hakim Amir Abd Hamid.
