KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 – The idea of pursuing post-graduate studies in the United Kingdom has been made more attractive for Malaysians with the launch of the “GREAT Scholarships 2019 – Malaysia”.
At an event held in conjunction with the Study UK Malaysia Exhibition in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday, the British Council announced that the initiative is being carried out in partnership with five universities.
They are Aberystwyth University, Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Kent, the University of Stirling, and the University of Warwick.
The funds for the scholarship, said to be more than RM500,000, is jointly provided by the British Council, the UK government’s Great Britain Campaign and the participating universities.
More Malaysians pursuing post-graduate studies in UK
According to the British Council, statistics show that more than 17,000 students from Malaysia pursue tertiary education in the UK every year, and of that number, there is a growing trend of students now enrolling for post-graduate courses in the UK.
“Currently, the number of postgraduate students accounts for about 15% of the total number of Malaysian students in the UK.
“Postgraduate studies in the UK are more appealing as the duration of the programmes are relatively short.
“Most UK postgraduate degrees take only one year to complete, making the overall cost much more affordable compared to other countries,” said Sarah Deverall, Director Malaysia at the British Council.
She added that the five univerisities participating in this programme have been welcoming Malaysian students to their campuses for years and they value the diversity and academic contribution that Malaysian students bring.
