KUALA LUMPUR – PKR leaders Nurul Izzah Anwar and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad appeared at a Press Conference earlier today voicing support for ousted Egyptian president Morsi, “who was democratically elected but continues to be in detention right till today and is in ill health” she said.
Nurul Izzah also said “that there are many other Egyptian MPs living in Malaysia who had to seek refuge in Malaysia and they had been teaching and contributing to Malaysian economy and I think we are richer in terms of that”.
She clarified that her concern today is to remind Malaysians about the coup and that we should rightly address discussions about human rights and democracy, and to see greater collaboration including to showcase roles that Egypt can play with regards to democracy. She also highlighted the possibility for the MPs in exile to collaborate with Inter Parliamentary Union. She reminded that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other Malaysian MPs (also pointing to Nik Nazmi) were unfairly investigated and prosecuted, have used Inter Parliamentary Union to address the issues and that would be their focus. MP Nik Nazmi echoed the same sentiment when he addressed the members of the press; he reminded that Morsi was overthrown in a coup and it is in the interest of the world to support them so they can have democratic process like most countries.
The two Malaysian Members of Parliament appeared alongside 4 exiled MPs from Egypt. The PC was aired live via Nurul Izzah’s Facebook page, however the live feed seemed to have ended abruptly. Prior to that, MP Nurul Izzah invited one of the Egyptian MPs to give a speech. In his speech, he praised Malaysia’s democracy and congratulated Malaysia for releasing “Dr Anwar Ibrahim”. He said the release of Dr Anwar was important for democracy in Malaysia and for democracy in other places. He sees the release of Dr Anwar will remind them about the release of Dr Morsi who was democratically elected by the people of Egypt. He went on to explain the situation in Egypt since the military coup 5 years ago and how the country is deteriorating and that there is no political freedom in Egypt except for those supporting the military regime.
He then said there was even a fake election in Egypt, however the live feed ended abruptly.
